STAR LEGEND AND STAR PRIDE IN ST. MAARTEN |

Cruise ships of all description come to St. Maarten. This includes not only the largest of the large mass market cruise ships but also the small luxury yacht-like cruise ships. In this feature, we see two of the best known ships in the latter category.
The three yacht-like cruise ships of Wind Star Cruises provide informal, intimate destination-focused cruise experiences. There are only a couple of hundred passengers aboard served by 150 crew members. Star Legend was the last of three nearly identical cruise ships built by Schichau Seebeckwerft in the 1990s. Like her sisters, Star Legend was to go to Seabourn Cruises but she ended up with Royal Viking Line. However, after a term with Royal Cruise Line, she eventually was purchased by Seabourn. She stayed with Seabourn until all three ships were bought by Windstar in 2015. The three ships have undergone several refurbishments over the years with another round scheduled for 2021. |

Here, we see Star Legend at St. Maarten's new pier. Although the pier was originally built to accommodate the giant Oasis of the Seas, it is also used by smaller ships.

Of course, other Wind Star ships call at St. Maarten. Here, we see Star Pride, the first of the three sisters to be built at St. Maarten's original pier. Both piers are part of the Dr. AC Wathey cruise port outside of Philipsburg on the Dutch side of the island.
