SEA PRINCESS IN NEW YORK

By late afternoon on the second day, the skies had turned cloudy and a New York summer downpour appeared likely. With the re-fueling finished and her passengers back abaord, it was time to leave.

Therefore, Sea Princess backed out of her berth into the Hudson River (called the North River at this point).

Leaving the Passenger Ship Terminal is not an easy maneuver.  The piers are perpendicular to the course of the river.  Consequently, when a ship backs out of her berth, the powerful current is pushing against her side.  Therefore, a tug boat stood by to assist Sea Princess.
Once out in the middle of the river, Sea Princess had to turn 90 degrees in order to exit the harbor.

After Sea Princess completed her turn, the tug came along side to take off the docking pilot.

Sea Princess then headed down the river past the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty and on out to sea.
