In April 2004, Queen Elizabeth 2 abdicated the role of Cunard Line's flagship, transferring the flag to Queen Mary 2, which had entered service in January. The transfer was preceded by a tandem crossing from New York City to Southampton with much public attention.
The practical result of this transfer was that QM2 took on the task of making regularly-scheduled transatlantic crossings. QE2's role became one of cruising from Southampton with an occasional crossing and world cruise.
However, if anyone had thought QE2 would just fade away, they were very much mistaken - - this was anything but a quiet retirement. QE2 remained the most famous ship in the world and wherever she went she attracted attention. Although the ship did not have all the features and amenities of more recently built passenger ships, people were still anxious to sail on her.
QE2 participated in a number of special events during this period. These included a meeting of QE2, QM2 and the recently-built Queen Victoria in 2007 in New York City. The number of such events increased after it was announced that the ship would be leaving service altogether in 2008 to become a floating hotel in Dubai. People wanted to say good-bye.
