In 2016, Disney Magic returned to New York to do a series of autumn cruises. Her base for these cruises was New York's historic Passenger Ship Terminal (a.k.a. Manhattan Cruise Terminal).

The Passenger Ship Terminal is convenient for passengers as it lies close to the tourist attractions of Midtown Manhattan as well as the rail and bus transportation hubs. However, it is challenging for mariners as the piers are perpendicular to the course of the Hudson River.

When a ship exits the berths, the current of the river pushes against the port side. As a result, some ships have begun their journeys sailing sideways down the river. However, Disney Magic has no such problem. Instead, she backs quickly and smoothly out into the river.

Since the open sea lies downstream several miles, Disney Magic has to make a 90 degree turn.

Her turn complete, Disney Magic proceeds down river with the towers of Manhattan to port and the sun setting over New Jersey to starboard.
