SUMMARY Celebrity Edge is the first ship in a new class of ships. According to Celebrity, the name was selected to reflect the idea that in creating this ship “every single design element has been taken to the leading-edge of possibility.”
The ship's innovative design is apparent from the first glance. To begin, her profile is different than most modern cruise ships. The bow slopes backward from the waterline. This is to reduce turbulence as the ship cuts through the waves, making for a smoother ride and more fuel efficiency. Second, located on her starboard side is a section of deck that is cantilevered out over the water. Called the “Magic Carpet,” this section of deck, which is the size of a tennis court, moves up and down and can be positioned at various locations from close to the water to high above. The Magic Carpet's function changes depends upon where it is stationed. For example, when it is stationed high on Deck 16, it is a specialty restaurant. When it is on Deck 2 close to the water, it becomes part of the Destination Gateway, a luxury embarkation area. The public areas aboard include several new venues. The Retreat is a section of the open sun deck reserved for suites guests. In addition to a pool, cabanas and premium deck furniture, this area includes its own lounge as well as the Luminae restaurant. Going a step beyond the lawn areas found on Celebrity's Solstice class ships, Edge has the Rooftop Garden with live plants. It has live entertainment and has its own grill restaurant featuring burgers, BBQ and brisket. The main pool area includes a 75 foot pool and hot tubs that are suspended in the air by glass stems recalling martini glasses. Sculptures and a large mirror installation give the area a sophisticated look. Also on the same deck is the enclosed adults-only Solarium area with a pool and the healthy dining Spa Cafe. The ship offers an array of accommodations including several different categories of suites. It also has staterooms designed for solo travelers. Designed to be outward-facing, the ship seeks to connect guests with its surroundings, offering more panoramic views of the sea and of destinations. An example are the stateroom “Infinite Verandas,” which seek to blur the distinction between inside and outside. For her construction, Celebrity returned to the shipyard in St. Nazaire, France where Celebrity's Millennium class ships were built. (See e.g. Celebrity Constellation). Other ships built at that yard include the legendary Normandie, the SS France and Queen Mary 2. |
