In this pictorial we see Carnival Freedom making a port call in Costa Maya, Mexico.
The cruise ship pier in Costa Maya projects out perpendicularly from the shore. At its far end, another section that runs parallel to the shore joins the eastern side of the pier. |

There is room for two large cruise ships to dock along the section of the pier that runs parallel to shore. However, on this occasion, Celebrity Equinox and Norwegian Bliss had already taken these berths.

Consequently, Carnival Freedom would have to dock along the section of the pier that projects out from the shore. Since Freedom had approached the port sailing parallel to the shore, she had to make a 90 degree turn in order to dock.

|
Having completed the turn so that her stern faced the shore, Freedom had to back up until she was along side the pier. Inasmuch as the pier is exposed to the wind and the movements of the sea, this was not as simple a task as it might seem at first glance.

|
Nonetheless, Freedom executed the maneuver and her passengers went ashore staying until after the other two cruise ships had departed.
