OVERVIEW Marella Voyager is a medium-size holiday cruise ship catering to the British market.
This ship has been popular through-out her long-history. Built by Meyer Werft in 1997, Voyager was the second ship in Celebrity Cruises' Century class and was given the name Mercury (later changed to Celebrity Mercury). Her two sister ships Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Century are now also with Marella as Marella Explorer and Marella Explorer 2 respectively. In 2007, Celebrity's parent company, the Royal Caribbean Group, entered into a joint venture with the German conglomerate TUI AG to form a cruise line to cater to the German-speaking market. Four years later, Celebrity Mercury was transferred to TUI Cruises. The ship underwent an extensive refurbishment including the addition of more balcony cabins and emerged as Mein Schiff 2. The success of the Mein Schiff ships in the German market led TUI Cruises to order the construction of a series of new ships. The first of these was delivered in 2014 and was quickly popular. By 2015, TUI decided it would concentrate on new-builds for the German market and use the former Celebrity ships in its U.K. cruise line, Thompson Cruises, subsequently renamed Marella Cruises. The original plan had been to transfer both Mein Schiff 1 (the former Celebrity Galaxy) and Mein Schiff 2 by 2017. However, these ships were so popular in Germany that it was decided to retain Mein Schiff 2 in the TUI fleet temporarily. However, since TUI wanted to use the Mein Schiff 2 name on a new-build, the original Mein Schiff 2 was renamed Mein Schiff Herz. In April 2023, Mein Schiff Herz left the TUI fleet and was given an extensive refurbishment at the Navanta shipyard in Cadiz, Spain. Following a re-naming ceremony in Malaga, the ship went into service as Marella Voyager in June 2023. Although Marella Voyager is smaller than most ships emerging from the shipyards today, she has the standard features travelers expect on a modern cruise ship including an outdoor pool with two whirlpools, a spa, a gym, a show lounge, bars, shops, clubs for children, and both indoor and outdoor cinemas. The shipboard experience is similar to that provided on other Marella ships. Voyager also has a range of complimentary and extra-tariff dining venues. The traditional buffet restaurant has been replaced by The Kitchens, a food court with eight different eateries. There are also restaurants featuring Mexican, Italian and Pan-Asian cuisines. The Silver Fork specializes in British favorites while Platters has cheese boards. Of course, there is also a main dining room. Most passengers are older or retired British travelers although there are also some young families. |
